Meteorites and diamonds

Jewelry designer Neil Lane looks to the heavens for inspiration

By Bernadette Morra

The meteorites that come crashing down from space are often flecked with diamonds, though they are tiny and not of gem quality.

Hollywood jeweler Neil Lane’s vision of diamond meteorites is, of course, much more glam.

Using the rough, amorphous chunks of space rock as inspiration, Lane has created dramatic platinum spheres, covered with diamonds, rock crystals and pearls.

Fittingly, Lane unveiled his Meteorite collection at the California premiere of Star Trek in May.

Zoe Saldana, who plays Nyota Uhura in the film, walked the red carpet with diamond and platinum ball drop earrings swinging over a black and silver beaded cocktail sheath. Her right index finger sported a dome-shaped Comet ring set with a swirl of yellow, black and white diamonds.

Rachel Nichols, who plays the red-headed Orion Gaila, wore Lane’s rock crystal, diamond and platinum bracelet, with large diamond and platinum earrings and rings. Winona Ryder, who plays Spock’s mother, appeared in a slim gold bracelet dotted with black and white pearls and diamonds.

Gossip Girls star Leighton Meester attended the screening in a stack of Meteorite diamond bangles.

Meanwhile, Lane has been helping The Bachelorette Jillian Harris up her glamour quotient – most notably with a diamond and platinum Cleopatra necklace valued at $250,000 U.S.

The piece might not have been celestial-inspired but it was out of this world, nonetheless.
