Charlotte Gainsbourg’s matted mane suggests that combs and brushes have been scarce at the 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival. Gems, however, are another story. Recession or no recession, the red carpet still demands a certain standard of glamour and the stars are more than willing to comply. It helps that Chopard is one of the festival sponsors. On opening night the jeweler held a party to launch their first fragrance, Cascade, which comes in a bottle inspired by a pair of diamond earrings. Chopard gems on the red carpet have included a marquise cut diamond choker with matching earrings worn by Barbara Mori to the premiere of Bright Star. The ensemble totaled a not-too-shabby 205 carats. Parvathy Omanakuttan, Miss India 2008, wore a lengthy pair of Chopard South Sea Golden pearl earrings to the same event. That and a 192 carat yellow sapphire cuff set in yellow gold provided evidence that yellow gems and metals are a stunning accompaniment to a gold sequined dress. Omanakuttan’s earrings also summed up the main festival jewelry trend – go big or go home. Shoulder duster doesn’t quite capture the extent of the drops, which seemed to scrape her collarbones. De GRISOGONO also has a strong presence at the festival with supergems both on the red carpet and at a nearby exhibition of haute joaillerie. Natasha Amal is one of many who have turned up in designs by the house. Her white and pink gold earrings were set with 162 white diamond briolettes of 74.16 carats, 397 rubies of 16.56 carats and 86 white diamonds. She also wore a bracelet of 1,995 white diamonds totalling 37 carats. KEYWORDS: Cannes red carpet jewelry, Chopard, de Grisogono, Natasha Amal, Barbara Mori, Parvathy Omanakuttan
