Classic jewelry designs go best with origami fashion trend

By Bernadette Morra

The origami trend that has been unfolding on the designer runways of late got two big boosts at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards.

Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson wore a cocktail dress from Roland Mouret’s RM collection that was divided into three blocks: a rippling white bodice that fanned up around her chin, an asymmetrically-folded silver cummerbund, and a sexy black pencil skirt. Her hair was sleekly cinched back in a side-parted ponytail.

Katy Perry also went for a classic coif – a bouncy, ‘40s-inspired pageboy – to go with a romantic pink strapless confection by Basil Soda. The finely ruched dress had a bouquet of folds that fell from midriff to thigh and was accented with a beaded and crystal spray.

Both women were clever to finish their looks with classic jewelry designs. Anything else would have competed with all that complex geometry.

Hudson wore white gold and diamond geometric drop earrings ($98,000 U.S.), a white gold, diamond and sapphire double Panther head bracelet, ($410,000) and a white gold, diamond and onyx Panther cuff ($330,000), all from Cartier.

Katy Perry donned Jacob & Co.’s six-stone princess-cut diamond drop earrings, a vintage diamond bracelet and diamond Sofia bangle by H. Stern, and H. Stern’s floral diamond right hand ring.
