Bare shoulders demand big jewels

Golden Globes stars still go for bling

Strapless dresses and plunging necklines made fine jewelry a must at the 66th annual Golden Globes awards in Los Angeles.

And most stars didn’t stop at one or two baubles. Instead, diamond drops swung over statement necklaces, and multiple bracelets were worn on each arm.

Beyonce Knowles shone with a spectacular looped diamond fringe collar by Lorraine Schwartz. The fact that it topped a spiral of beads and pleats by Elie Saab, proved that sometimes more can indeed be more.

Elizabeth Banks also beamed in a statement necklace by Lorraine Schwartz though hers was more period in style. The piece was worn with a romantic dress of millefeuille pleats by J. Mendel.

Kate Winslet went for a much more severe look with a bare-shouldered black column from Yves Saint Laurent. That paved the way for supergems from Chopard to take centre stage, including 10 carat diamond drop earrings and a 47 carat, five row diamond bracelet. Penelope Cruz sparkled in Chopard's 10 carat pear-shaped chandelier earrings and 20 carat yellow diamond cocktail ring.

Ten seemed to be the magic carat number for the night. Amanda Seyfriend wore 10 carat emerald cut diamonds surrounded by brilliant cut stones by H. Stern and worth a cool $1.4 million U.S. Tina Fey wore H. Stern's Isis diamond earrings, two styles of black and white diamond rings, and a diamond and green tourmaline vintage brooch in her hair.

There were many asymmetrical gowns at the Golden Globes and jewelry seemed to provide a natural focal point. For instance, a teardrop turquoise necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels added a brilliant boost of colour to the white Christian Dior gown that featured a huge bow over one of Eva Mendes’ hips.
