Pomellato photo Nudo rings by Pomellato
Pomellato NudoHow to decide which colour rings to stackBy Bernadette Morra
Every now and then, when I was the fashion editor at The Toronto Star, I would receive a phone call or letter from a reader asking for fashion advice. The most amusing was the woman who called me from one of the city's most expensive boutiques asking whether polka dots would be "in" for a while. She was thinking of buying a designer dress and wanted to be sure she would get lots of wear out of it. I told her that I could not help her because I could not see the dress over the phone and if I told her to buy it and her husband hated it, he would blame me. Of course this scenario would never happen today. She could simply snap a photo of the dress and email it to me, or post it on Twitter and solicit opinions. I was reminded of the polka dot shopper when I was researching Pomellato's Nudo collection on the web. I came across a thread in a discussion group where a woman named Monica was asking for thoughts on which colour combination of the rings she should buy to stack. There were two photos of her hand: one wearing three rings in an autumn combination of smokey quartz, middle brown madeira quartz and light green quartz. The other photo featured candy hues of smokey quartz, dark amethyst, and light amethyst. The photos were not of great quality but it didn't matter. The exercise helped her make her own decision. Good thing, perhaps, that the latest addition to the collection wasn't yet available because that might have confused the matter further. The latest Nudo style, so-called because of the seamless "naked" setting which gives the impression of a suspended gem, is the London blue topaz, inspired by the deep blue of a Northern sky. The new London blue topaz makes a dramatic combination with the lemon quartz and rose de France Nudos. Don't you think, Monica?
