Hooves and whips inspire new Hermes jewelry collection by Pierre Hardy

By Bernadette Morra

Hermes jewelry designer Pierre Hardy has harnessed the house's horsey roots for a new high jewelry collection.

The 14 pieces, which will be available by special order, play on two iconic equestrian motifs - the whip and the hoof.

The whip-like necklace wraps the neck in platinum and diamonds in a style called the Fouet. The chunky Centaure necklace, bracelet, earrings and rings are a sculptural interpretation of a hoof.

Hardy, who has aptly translated his skills as a shoe designer into expanding the Hermes jewelry range beyond chunk sterling bracelets and enamel cuffs, presented the collection at the flagship headquarters at 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris.

The Centaure ring comes in rose gold with a black jade or orange aventurine stone ringed with brilliant cut diamonds. Others are entirely paved with diamonds. The Fouet necklace is set with 3,669 diamonds, totaling 36.16 carats.

Prices range from 17,500 euros, or $23,675 U.S. for clip-on rose gold and black jade earrings to 650,000 euros, or $880,000, for the diamond necklace. The pieces will come in custom-made boxes made of black alligator leather.

Hermès will be taking orders for the collection on a world tour that will stop in Tokyo in September, Hong Kong in October and Berlin in November. The waiting time is five to seven months, and pieces can be adapted to customers' tastes.
