De Grisogono gets gutsy with turquoise

By Bernadette Morra

Designing a turquoise jewelry collection for summer is a no brainer.

But pairing the milky pastel with emeralds and sapphires?

That’s a gutsy move that takes this warm weather staple into a much more sophisticated realm.

Leave it to Fawaz Gruosi, the designer and gemologist behind the Geneva-based high jewelry house de Grisogono.

For his summer 2009 collection, Gruosi is offering bold lashings of primary colour with breezy blue turquoise as a focal point of the designs.

Earrings include 85 ct. turquoise drops suspended from a spiral of emeralds.

Another pair has turquoise teardrops hanging from a wave of emeralds on one ear, and a wave of sapphires on the other.

A necklace links turquoise pillows that appear to be sliced with emeralds – an illusion that plays on the soft, fragile nature of the stone.

Turquoise can crumble, scratch and mark so easily, working with it is a challenge.

Ring stones are best off in a protective setting – so de Grisogono’s include a 5.90 carat cylinder of turquoise nestled between two emerald coils.

Call it protection with panache.
